Workshop for New School Committee Members

The following members were present: Mayor Michael Bissonnette (7:54 PM), Dana Cutter, David Barsalou, Marjorie Wojcik, Michael Pise, Debra Styckiewicz , Donald Lamothe and Sharon Nawrocki.

 

Absent were Susan Lopes, Mary Beth Costello, Susan Lecca and Chester Szetela.

 

Also present were Richard W. Rege, Jr., Charles Tetrault, Shirley Alvira, James Devine, Denise Ruszala and Sarah Hoar.

 

The workshop was called to order by Mrs. Wojcik, Vice-Chairperson, at 7:08 PM.

 

Office of the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel

Mr. Tetrault, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel, reviewed his job duties and the responsibilities of his office:  job fairs, seminars, job descriptions, CORI, Civil Service, certifications/licensure, personnel records, student teacher internship, job applications, applicant interviews, advertisements, appointments, negotiations, individual contracts, grievances, Committee on Employee Relations, Non-Union Cycles, evaluations, salary adjustments, leaves of absence, retirements, employee attendance, employee transfers, seniority lists, professional teacher status, employment verifications, letters of reasonable assurance, state/federal laws, investigations, unemployment, budget and School Committee reports.

Office of the Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services

Mrs. Alvira, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, reviewed her duties: serve as Title I Director, manage secondary parent/guardian complaints, oversee the District Discipline Committee, oversee the School Resource Officers (SRO’s) program, serve as 504 District Coordinator, oversee and supervise five district wide teachers on special assignment, oversee and supervise the Transportation Manager, Special Education Director, Nurses Supervisor, and Grant Programs Coordinator, mentor new principals as assigned by the Superintendent, and participate in Student Advisory Council meetings.

 

Office of the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Accountability

Mr. Devine, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Accountability, described his performance responsibilities: assists the Superintendent in directing the administration and coordination of the district’s educational programs, Pre K-12, plans, organizes, controls and directs district research and accountability efforts including the development, implementation and evaluation of district, state and federal assessments and assessment results, directs the system-wide accountability program including, but not limited to student assessment data to monitor the effectiveness of instructional services throughout the school system, monitors, analyzes and reports student achievement results, prepares reports of district and school assessment data for schools, the district and the School Committee and appropriate agencies, prepares presentations to propose curriculum and instructional changes to the School Committee, administration, staff, and the general public, guides the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and instruction aligned to state frameworks, coordinates the activities of various curriculum and instruction committees and task forces, monitors site-based programs to ensure that curriculum implementation, instructional programs are of high quality, makes recommendations for consideration of policies relative to curriculum and instructional issues, and assumes any such duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.
