POLICY FOR PARTICIPATION IN ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES
MIAA Rules (listed below) for participation in athletic activities will be followed.
Academics
It is expected that the efforts of our athletes in the classroom will be no less than their efforts in the athletic arena. Any academic difficulty should be remedied before reaching the “danger of failing” stage. Coaches are encouraged to grant temporary leaves of absence to athletes who are in need of tutoring.
Academic Requirements
(from: Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Handbook)
60.1 A student must secure during the last marking period preceding the contest (e.g. second quarter marks and not semester grades determine third quarter eligibility) a passing grade in the equivalent of four major subjects. To satisfy this requirement, a student must have passed sufficient courses for that marking period which carry Carnegie Units totaling the equivalent of four l-year major English courses.
60.2 A student cannot at any time represent a school unless that student is taking courses which would provide Carnegie Units equivalent to four l-year major English courses.
60.3 To be eligible for the fall marking period, students are required to have passed for the previous academic year the equivalent of four l-year major English courses.
60.4 Academic eligibility of all students shall be considered as official and determining only on the date when the report cards for that ranking period have been issued to the parents of all students within a particular class.
Note: MIAA rules allow for a student to take the equivalent of what we would traditionally consider to be four one-year English courses. Athletes at high schools that implement a block-schedule that includes four (4) courses that are awarded 5 credits each would need to require that a student pass at least two (2) of the four courses to be eligible for athletic participation under MIAA basic standards.
The questions you must ask in determining equivalency are:
(If further clarification is necessary, the MIAA executive staff will be happy to assist.)
60.5 Incomplete grades may not be counted toward eligibility.
60.6 A student who repeats work upon which he/she has once received credit cannot count that subject a second time for eligibility.
60.7 A student cannot count for eligibility any subject taken during the summer vacation, unless that subject has been previously pursued and failed.
60.8 A student receiving services under Chapter 766 whose individualized education plan is a 502.4 or more restrictive prototype may be declared academically eligible by the principal provided that all other eligibility requirements are met.
